One response to “5 Things Moms Do That Make Every Therapist Cringe”

  1. Dr Efrat Schorr

I live in Israel, where, unfortunately, there is often scary stuff in the news. I have one child in particular who is sensitive to frightening situations and I have run interference with guests or other family members. I have greeted friends or family at the front door with the whispered request that we wait until the kids are in bed before we talk about whatever horrible situation is on the headlines. I also don’t listen to the news on the radio when she is in the car. I think that it is important for children to feel as secure as parents can help them feel in this crazy world. As adults, we can’t always know what our children will find scary or upsetting and I can’t see any reason to expose them to the news.
I will not lie if they ask me about what is going on, but it doesn’t need to be rubbed in kids’ faces. People need to talk about what is going on around them – but not while my child is in the room trying to eat her lunch and just be a kid.
Thank you for raising awareness of this important issue.
    Best wishes,
    Dr Efrat Schorr
