This Year’s Flu Is Already At Epidemic Levels!

The flu season came very early this year and according to the CDC is gearing up to be the most intense one in a decade. 41 states have already reported widespread influenza activity which is up 25% from just two weeks ago. Many people have been sickened and hospitalized and 20 children have died. The USA is already at levels of infection not usually seen until the end of winter and the epidemic is projected to get worse.

But it is not too late to get some protection with the flu vacine, if you haven’t already done so. The good news is that the strain of flu that’s out there now is covered by the vacine. Please remember that you cannot get the flu from the vacine itself. You may get a sore arm where the shot was given or a slight fever but that’s it!

For those who can’t stomach the idea of the needle, a nasal spray form is also available. If you are in the high risk group (pregnant women, young children, the elderly, people with chronic health conditions like asthma) and happen to get it, early treatment is essential.

The CDC recommends you contact your doctor right away and get started on a course of TamiFlu, which seems to be working well to treat this year’s flu. It has just been approved for use in children as young as two weeks.

Take good care and wash those hands!!
