Warning! Infant Tylenol Dosing Gets Confusing

One of the most common questions moms ask is, “How much Tylenol do I give?”

The answer will get a little more complicated soon, since  the Infant Tylenol concentration is going to change in the next few months. Infant’s Tylenol will be the same concentration as Children’s Tylenol, 160 mg per 5 ml (one teaspoon), instead of the concentrated solution that was 80 mg per 0.8 ml.  The change is planned because the different concentrations of Tylenol intended for infants v. children were found to lead to errors and overdosing.

The new packaging for Infant Tylenol will not have dosing for children under 2 (this may turn out to be problematic, so watch for changes in that policy, too). The correct dosage for babies is based on weight, and will need to be confirmed by your family doc.

Stay tuned for more information on the Tylenol website as the new concentration is rolled out.  For the next few months, you may find both concentrations on the shelf at your pharmacy – be sure to check the dosing and concentration before using it.
