Dear Mamas,
My five-year-old son is a bedwetter and I am really at my wits end. I have tried waking him several times a night, limiting drinks etc. but he still wets the bed a few times each month. When will this end?? I thought he should be able to fully control himself by now.
Shannon
Hi Shannon,
Bedwetting is really common and it runs strongly in families. Believe it or not, 5 million kids in the U.S. alone are bedwetters! Children develop the ability to control their bladders at different ages and it sounds like your son just hasn’t gotten there yet. But he will. His brain has to learn to respond to the signal that his bladder is full. Once that happens, your troubles will disappear.
At age 7, only about 9% of boys and 6% of girls are still wetting the bed. By age 10 the numbers start to go down even more. So hang in there. In the meantime take a look at this great slideshow on the subject put together by WebMD. It covers pretty much everything you need to know and lists a bunch of things you can do to help everyone cope until it gets resolved. CHECK IT OUT and try not to worry. Neither you nor your son is at fault here. It’s just one of those things and it will improve!
