Whoa! Parents Get Detention, Too?

How’s this for holding mom and dad accountable? As reported on Good Morning America, Kym Worthy, a prosecutor in Wayne County, Michigan is trying to get a law passed that would send parents to the slammer for three days if they skip out on that always fun  parent- teacher conference.

What? That’s right. Worthy has decided that enough is enough after watching the violent crime rate among kids as young as 10, 11 and 12 rise in her community. A big part of the problem, she feels, is that the kids who are involved in these crimes are not in school and should be. They typically have a history of truancy and other school-related problems and she feels it’s time for their parents to step up and take care of business or face the consequence.

The law would only apply to the parents of children who are having problems in school — not the ones who are doing okay. And their parents would have up to three opportunities to schedule the appointment at their convenience — either morning, afternoon or evening — and they could reschedule if they were ill or unable to attend for some other plausible reason.

Basically, Ms. Worthy has her sights set on the parents who consistently thumb their noses at the schools and the teachers who are trying to educate their children. What do you think of that?!
