MAMAS ALERT: BPA Present in Most Canned Food

We’ve written about BPA before. It’s a chemical (bisphenol-A) present in many of the plastics used in food storage, but this new warning covers virtually all canned food products.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and many other environmental groups are concerned about its health risks, particularly to pregnant women and young children.

Bisphenol-A is an endocrine disruptor, and has the potential to mimic or alter hormones that control biological processes in the body. Researchers have linked BPA to various developmental problems, from behavior issues to an increased risk of disease. Read the full article and warning here.

Until more is known, we encourage you to avoid food products, including canned goods, that are stored in plastics containing BPA. This is yet another argument (as if you needed more) for a diet loaded with fresh foods that grow from the ground, free of pesticides if possible, rather than the stuff manufactured in a processing plant.
