Facebook For Kids? It’s Togetherville

There’s a new social networking site for tykes who are too young for Facebook and MySpace ( both prohibit under-13s from joining, though many do anyway). It’s called Togetherville.

Parents can log on to Togetherville directly, and in fact, kids’ accounts must be created by their parents using their own Facebook logins. The site is aimed at kids ages 6 – 10,  and offers games, pre-screened YouTube videos and educational applications, but no ads.

Kids have separate logins, and the site looks different depending on whether a parent or a child is logged in. There are even Facebook-style status updates, called ”quips,” with a twist: kids choose from a preselected menu of updates, which change daily.

Parents can send their kids virtual gifts, review their activities on the site or look at virtual art they’ve created. Togetherville plans to make money by selling virtual goodies for its games.

So send in your comments and tell us what you think of Togetherville.

We see pros and cons. If this succeeds in getting younger kids off Facebook (doubtful), that’s a good thing. But do we really need to provide children with more online time, given that they should be engaged in more active play and less face time with computer screens?
