There’s Nothing Cuter Than A Toddler In Heels

I held off on this story for months because I was hoping it would quietly bite the dust but the trend seems to be picking up instead. So now I have to chime in. I have to. First it was the company that produced high heels for infants.

Maybe it was suposed to be a not-so-well-thought-out joke but it fed into a quietly brewing fashion storm aimed at our tiniest daughters.

Next thing you know, photos of 3-year-old Suri Cruise and other high-profile celeb preschoolers out and about in their high-heeled footwear started to appear in newspapers and magazines worldwide. And now, hundreds of these so-called children’s shoes are available online and in stores.

High heels, as a mainstream fashion option for children, have become a new norm. Excuse me as I throw up.

Kenneth Cole has a hot, strappy little number in his Reaction Kids Dan-cin Shoes line that sell for $39.95. Perfect, I assume, for that special kindergarten graduation outfit that’s just begging for a show-stopping accessory.

If that doesn’t do it for you, mootsies tootsies has one with a 1/2 inch platform, 2 inch heel and peep-toe that might be more up your alley. As they say, “A classic never goes out of style,” and “The covered heel makes this style perfect for any season.” Thank God that “The solid heels give her the height she wants with the stability she needs.” You can’t beat that when we’re talking 3 and 4-year-olds. And hey, doesn’t she look hot?

Maybe you were thinking of something a little less showy, something more appropriate for a Saturday shopping spree with her pre-school buddies at the mall. In that case, these may be the ones: marketed for toddlers, this little number from Sketchers has a “unique platform” that is padded for all day wear. Okay….  Plus, the heel is only 1 1/2 inches high. That should be a piece of cake for any baby worth her weight in wipes. And again, how adorable is she?

Oh, she’s five? Well then, try this gorgeous platform wedge sandal with a 3 inch heel by AWOL Kids for the older girl. It’s going to get her a lot of attention. And you will get some too for being so good at dressing up your life-sized doll with such cache.

Never mind that these heels may interfere with the normal development of her foot, or force her to grow up too fast, or get the idea that her appearance is what matters most about her. Hair, nails and shoes count! Everyone knows that!

Forget all that talk about girls being objectified and sexualized before they can even spell their names. Your daughter is a fashionista! She was born to shop and look great. You know it and she knows it too! And after all, isn’t it every girl’s dream to be just like mommy? Why wait? Give her what she wants today.

And just tell all those child development specialists, pediatricians, feminists and child therapists to take a hike.
