When kids are caught doing the wrong thing, it sometimes helps to notice and ask them to reconsider. When my sons Sam and Max were young, it was hard for them to stand in line … at the supermarket checkout, the movie theater, or just about anyplace else … without getting into a pushing match. If I showed I was disappointed and calmly said ‘Hey guys, please make a different choice and start over’, it worked a lot better than yelling at them to cut it out (yes, I tried that, too). Of course if they chose to continue the shoving, quick separation was in order.
